Renowned Lake Itasca, the birthplace of the mighty Mississippi River, was named by the intrepid explorer Henry Rowe Schoolcraft.

Shoolcraft creatively blended two Latin words to christen the lake: veritas, symbolizing truth, and caput, signifying head or "true head", paying homage to the river's origin.
